This striking fellow is a Muscovy duck. Although they are domestic ducks, this one must have escaped from a farm somewhere because he was with a group of mallards by the Thames River when I saw him. That was about eight years ago. I never thought I would paint his portrait, mostly because I worried that he's not attractive enough. But when I was looking for a subject with lots of colour and light, I came across the photo of this duck in my files, and I decided that I really wanted to paint him. I think he has a great sense of dignity about him in spite of his unusual appearance.
