Mourning doves are gentle, good-natured birds that are known to mate for life. This painting started with a reference photo of these two fluffed up on a cold, grey day in early spring. The male is the one on the right, his blue-gray crown visible as he preens his feathers. The background in my photo was very stark and there were no buds on the branches. As spring began to unfold outside my window, I had a flash of inspiration and added the buds into the painting, creating a softer scene that seems more fitting for these two lovebirds.
